February 8 Vikings Win WLT

 The Wisconsin Lutheran Vikings gained a measure of redemption by completed a sweep of the Wisconsin Little Ten Conference just days after losing to Hartford in the league’s final dual of the season in an upset.

The Vikings sent six wrestles to the finals and won five individual titles while totaling 225 points. Oconomowoc finished second with two champions, seven finalists and 217 points. Hartford finished third at the eight-team meet with 186.5 points.

The tournament basically came down to two head-to-head matches in the finals between Lutheran and Oconomowoc with the team title on the line.

At 113 pounds, Lutheran junior Tyler Roecker defeated Oconomowoc junior Tristen Mueller by a 13-8 decision. At 126, Lutheran senior Tepra Wright – the defending 126 Division 2 state champion – defeated Oconomowoc sophomore Luke Hyland by a 23-7 technical fall in 5:50.

Those two victories provided Lutheran with its margin of victory. Lutheran also saw junior Jake Nygaard (132), senior Aaron Michaels (138) and junior Quinten Reid (285) win titles.

Oconomowoc sent seven wrestlers to the finals and saw three win titles. Oconomowoc’s champions were junior Brandon Laughlin (145), senior Richard Kuehl (195) and junior Brett Samson (220).

West Bend East senior Jordan Gundrum won the 160 title by pinning Oconomowoc senior Nathan Haines in the final in 1:51. The championship was Gundrum's fourth after wining the 126 title in 2012, the 145 title in 2013 and the 160 title a year ago.

Hartford junior Beau Breske – the two-time Division 1 state champion – basically announced he will wrestle the state tournament series at 170 pounds after he won that weight class. In the 170 final, Breske pinned West Bend West junior Garrett White in 5:23. It was Breske’s third title after winning the 152 title each of the past two years.
