What: WIAA state individual wrestling tournament

Thursday notes

Star of the day: Jason Ipsarides, Cedarburg. Ipsarides (49-0), ranked No. 1 at 152, almost joined the upset list but he found a way in overtime to turn back Whitnall/Greendale senior Eric Martinson (35-8) in a 9-5 victory in overtime in the Division 1 quarterfinals at 152. Ipsarides opened the overtime with a shot but Martinson defended it well and nearly scored a takedown to pull of the upset. Ipsarides, however, rolled through and gained control, tilting Martinson with 10 seconds left to score four points and move on to the semifinals. Ipsarides is to face Wisconsin Rapids junior Brock Benitz (46-5) in the semifinals.


Coming up: Several all-area showdowns will highlight the Division 1 semifinals. The biggest will take place between Tosa junior Justin Folley (44-1) and West Allis Central senior Tere White (42-0) at 120. Folley is ranked No. 1. White is ranked No. 3. The other big semifinal showdown is between Wilmot junior Jake Morgan (32-1) and Burlington senior Ben Hornickle (50-1) at 138.


Area party at 160: The top three wrestlers in the weight class are all from the area and they all survived the quarterfinals. In one semifinal, West Bend East senior Jordan Gundrum (48-0) is to face Kenosha Bradford junior Oscar Ramos (38-1). Gundrum is ranked No. 1. Ramos is ranked No. 3. No. 2-ranked Oak Creek senior Ben Hakes (27-1) is to face Marshfield senior Mitch Hertel (26-1).


State champs battle: Kaukauna senior Robert Lee (41-1) needed only an escape in the second period and solid ride in the third period to defeat Stoughton junior Collin Kraus (48-5) by a 1-0 decision in the quarterfinals at 138. Lee is a two-time state champion and three-time finalist who won the 132 title a year ago. Kraus won the 126 title a year ago. Next up for Lee is Wauwatosa junior Ben Reagan (41-2) in the semifinals.


Still undefeated: Janesville Craig senior Airk Furseth (43-0 at 113), Milton senior Nolan Shea (39-0 at 120), West Allis Central senior Tere White (42-0) at 126, Schofield D.C. Everest senior Joe Ziolkowski (43-0 at 145), Waterford senior Max Fisher (27-0 at 145), Cedarburg senior Jason Ipsarides (49-0 at 152), West Bend East senior Jordan Gundrum (48-0 at 160), Hartford junior Beau Breske (49-0 at 170), Menomonie junior Mason Stokke (42-0 at 195), Bay Port senior Alex Ingold (39-0).


Reid moves on: Wisconsin Lutheran junor 285-pounder Quinton Reid (48-1) pinned Black River Falls junior Gary Garvin (26-11) 1:18 in the Division 2 preliminaries. Reid is to face Broadhead/Juda senior Logan Maurer (46-0) in the Division 2 quarterfinals.


Quote of the day: “I’ve set my goals high this year and he was one of the kids I wanted to beat,” Mukwonago freshman Aaron Schulist, who defeated No. 1-ranked Germantown junior Zack Szohr by a pin in their 106 quarterfinal.
