March 6 Kaukauna, Stoughton to Meet in D1 Final


            Madison – It will be No. 1 Kaukauna vs. No. 2 Stoughton in the dual everyone wants to see for the Division 1 title at the WIAA state team tournament at the UW Field House.

Both teams ensured the much anticipated showdown would occur by winning a pair of duals Friday night in the Division 1 quarterfinals.

Kaukauna (19-1), the defending Division 1 champions, advanced by defeating Burlington, 49-19, in the quarterfinals and Hudson, 41-26, in the semifinals. Hudson finished at 13-3.

Stoughton (24-1) advanced by defeating Sauk Prairie, 36-30, in the quarterfinals and Wisconsin Rapids, 36-30, in the semifinals. Rapids (19-1) lost for only the second time in 53 appearances at the state team tournament.

Kaukauna advanced to the state tournament for the sixth time. Kaukuana pulled away with bonus points as it posted five pins and added two major decisions in the victory over Hudson.

Stoughton advanced on the strength of two swing matches. At 132, Stoughton’s Garrett Model defeated Rapids’ Bergh Diebel by a 14-5 major decision. At 145, Stoughton’s Tyler Dow posted a 22-6 technical fall over Rapids’ Dylan Hall. Those three bonus team points ended up being the difference in the dual that lifted Stoughton to the final for the first time since 2004.
