By Joe Shinners

The South Milwaukee Rockets won the inaugural Larry O’Neil Dual Meet Tournament at Milwaukee Hamilton on Dec. 6. The Rockets lost to Nicolet, 37-31, in the first round before rebounding to win four consecutive dual meets to win the tournament with a 4-1 record. Milwaukee Pius, Nicolet and Milwaukee Marquette all finished the tournament with 3-2 records. Milwaukee Hamilton finished at 2-3 and Milwaukee Bay View finished at 0-5. South Milwaukee defeated Pius, 57-28, in the fifth round to win the tournament title.

The tournament is named after Larry O'Neil, the long-time wrestling coach who died last season after a heart attack. O’Neil is a member of the Wisconsin Wrestling Coaches Hall of Fame and was a Marine during the Korean War. He volunteered at Hamilton for five years prior to his death.
